WKU faculty discuss insurance for studies

Category : Bowling Green Daily News

Western Kentucky University faculty members discussed issues with the university’s study abroad insurance policy Thursday during the WKU faculty senate meeting.
The liability policy was renewed in December and “it covers any faculty who lead programs abroad for students.” However, it does not cover faculty who travel for other reasons, such as research, said Rick Sutton, director of international programs.
“I’m not entirely happy with this policy, and it does not cover any domestic programs,” he said.
The policy also makes sure students and faculty are aware of the risks of studying abroad and establishes faculty-staff travel authorization.
Still, studying abroad poses just as much risk as other university classes, such as chemistry courses. If a faculty member was sued for a student accident while studying abroad, he or she would be represented by the university counsel. But, as a state employee, he or she would be represented by the university counsel without the insurance policy, Sutton said.
Also, the coverage is about $100,000 per student, and in the event of a student death, most families would sue for more than that amount, he said.
“Frankly … I believe it’s a waste of money,” Sutton said.
The policy costs about $5,000 a year. But because the policy has been renewed, Sutton and others will work to make it more stronger and more inclusive, he said.
