Haven’t had a flu shot yet? The perfect opportunity is coming up as the H2U Center of Greenview Hospital hosts a Fight the Flu event offering free flu shots.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone who hasn’t received their vaccination to get it,” said Alan Palmer, director of marketing for Greenview.
And the timing of the event is just right.
“The last CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) map showed Kentucky and surrounding states as having widespread flu activity,” Palmer said.
Several cases of flu have been reported in and around Warren County, said Chip Kraus, public health services coordinator for the Barren River District Health Department. Nine cases of flu have been diagnosed in Warren County, while Edmonson and Logan have reported three cases each. Allen, Barren and Butler counties each have had two reported cases of flu and Hart County has had one.
Since it takes about two weeks for the flu shot to become effective, now is a good time to get the vaccine. While the flu season can begin earlier, seasonal flu activity usually peaks around the first of February and can last through May.
“We’ve had a steady flow of people with flu-like symptoms,” Palmer said.
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and can lead to death. Health care professionals recommend that everyone get a flu shot.
The Fight the Flu event will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the H2U Center on Andrea Street across from Greenview Regional Hospital. The free shots are for adults 18 and older and no appointment is necessary.
Palmer explained that this year, there is no shortage of flu shots and only one shot is necessary.
“We have as many doses as we need,” Palmer said.
Shots are also available through local health departments by calling: Barren County, 270-651-8321; Butler County, 270-526-3221; Edmonson County, 270-597-2194; Hart County, 270-524-2511; Logan County, 270-726-8341; Metcalfe County, 270-432-3214; Simpson County, 270-586-8261; Bowling Green-Warren County, 270-781-2490.
