Legislators propose 7.5% state pay cut

State employees could see a 7.5 percent pay cut for the next few months under a proposal recommended by a key legislative panel Tuesday.

Lawmakers pushing for the reduction said Kansas has no choice but to cut payrolls to offset steep revenue declines. The state’s fiscal problems, they noted, are due to a recession that has already taken its toll on the private sector.

“It’s painful. It’s difficult. But it’s necessary,” said Rep. Peter DeGraaf, R-Mulvane, who introduced the proposal. “We’ve got companies that have lost 50, 60 percent of their personnel.”
