A couple of hours after being sworn in Monday, state Treasurer Ron Estes said he plans to ask the Legislature to allow his office to get tax and vital-statistic information to find the owners of unclaimed
property.

Estes said the treasurer’s office has in its vault and accounts an estimated 0 million worth of property belonging to current and former Kansas citizens — and he wants to get rid of it.

“That’s one of the great things about being state treasurer,” said Estes, a Republican and former Sedgwick County treasurer. “You do get to give folks money back.”
